He was investigating the senior medical doctor of Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital for sodomising a 16 year old boy in Accra. The boy was 15 years when they first had sex. On Monday July 13, an Accra circuit court sentenced Dr. Ali-Gabass to 25 years imprisonment. The doctor refused to speak on record but later denied ever admitting to the offence. Manasseh however recorded him secretly and the tape was accepted by the court as evidence. This is the final part of exactly what transpired when Manasseh walked in Dr. Sulley Ali-Gabass’ office

Gabass: So, Manasseh, like I said, there is nothing I can do. If he’s HIV positive, I learn he is hepatitis positive.

Manasseh: Eish!

Gabass: That’s what he told me that he is hepatitis positive. I’m not, I’m not hepatitis positive. I’m not HIV positive. So, it means if he has contracted [it], then probably I will be positive too. But, I have to check it again. How? Insah Allah. I have met my end. Tell me your prognosis.

Manasseh: I’m saddened myself to be honest with you.

Gabass: No, yes. The prognosis is bad because people want to hear only bad thing. The good things are swept away by the little bad thing.

Manasseh: Yes, like I was reading something on your wall but I didn’t finish.

Gabass: That’s right, that’s right. The good things you do are always written on water. This was given to me by a lady who has died. That’s early 1996, that’s when I was posted here and I was doing a locum at SDA clinic. I met her there and she became my mother.

The way she saw the way I worked and it seemed nobody was talking about it was when she gave it to me. She kept telling me that the good things people do, nobody hears, it is only the bad things that are heard. That I should take heart. That’s the gift she gave me, so I always keep it there.

Anyway, errrm, I have a flaw and it’s an unforgiven flaw. I want you to tell me frankly, my prognosis so that I know how to adjust my life.

Manasseh: Errm, like what you …

Gabass: No, not what I will do. The output. Looking at my position. Looking at me, okay. This thing there is something that it’s there. This guy, it is not like I have not committed it. I have committed it and this is the situation we are in.

Okay? So, what? I’m finished. For instance, this town, can I stay in this town? And I have big project for this town … thinking about it. I have bought a land [to] construct a hospital.

[mawuni]

Manasseh: Wow!

Gabass: Oh yeah! And my main this thing is to do rehabilitation of people who have … like me. I have a radio program, you know, on Melody FM. Tomorrow, I’m on air [from] 7-8(am) – health issues and my main aim is rehabilitation of people who are addicted because I said it on air about my drug issue. The drug is Pethidine, we use it for patients. It helped me to sleep and then go to work. And the way I was able to come out of it, I believe [I] can help people to come out of every situation. So, we usually talk about it on air. And now this, this is the OPD building [Dr. Gabass shows Manasseh his proposed hospital’s architectural drawing].

Manasseh: Wow!

Gabass: It’s like the devil has actually caught me (…). This is the main building. This is it. This is the hospital, itself, Obstetric and Gyaenacology and then a rehabilitation centre. So, if you look at it, this was done … this is the hospital building complex, and this is the OPD building. This is the land, it’s actually two plus acres in the middle of town.

I acquired this very early 2005 and I have so much hope in myself. You see, when something happens like that, there are stages. First, first there is denial then there is a tough truth, acceptance.

Me, it’s very hard for me to tell a lie. I can’t. I mean I don’t know how to support it, so definitely, I won’t tell you a lie. It happened. But, if I’m the initiator, then I’m sure I won’t say this truth. If that’s the case, then I would have gotten problems here already. You see, those we think they, they will not betray you are those that will betray you.

I thought he’s a Muslim, he understands … and because I’m like a figure head to him, maybe it caused my guard to go down.

This guy I have been working with him, he doesn’t even know I’m … [he turns to answer a phone call. The person at the end of the phone tells Dr. Gabass of a problem he is battling. Gabass assured the worried caller that he would talk to him in the evening].

I give my numbers out to anybody with any problem. You come so we discuss. Sometimes, they come here and we discuss the problem, find solutions to their problems. If it’s referral, I refer. I do a lot of things in my own small way to help people because I need people who need help.

Like I was saying, those ones that you trust who will not betray you are the ones who will betray you because if I knew this guy will betray me, because if I knew I cannot trust this guy, I’m sure my alert level will be very very high. [He sighs]. I wish I had recorded all these conversations I had with him. This could have saved me because if I say he’s, you know, pestering me, the, this, thing [recording] will be there.]

The evidence will be there. You know, sometimes, our spirit is weak, it’s weak despite your worshipping and all that. When somebody touches your weakest point, you have no other this thing. You know, you have been in this business, you have unearthed a lot of vices in Ghana, you know how it goes, you know what is going to happen. Taken into account, you came to meet me at my office, you’ve gone to Effia-Nkwanta [Hospital] and you have asked me what I know. I may be high handed at times, I’m not a bad person generally and I help a lot of people in terms of school fees. Currently, there is somebody who is supposed to register his exams, he has no money, his father has no money. They came to me and luckily it wasn’t any much. They have 2 million Cedies (200GHC) and I gave them 2 million (200GHC). So, these are some of the things.

I don’t think that should exonerate me from all these things but whatever you do, you have to bear the consequences. But my point is that towards the general good of the society, probably this one should be … but when you said HIV thing, it took the thing out of turn.

Manasseh: If you are sure of yourself then …

Gabass: I’m very sure. I can do it right now in front of you.

Manasseh: If it so happens then what’s eh … you may have a case. It can happen that … no, I’m not saying you are [innocent]… it would mean that maybe you are not the only person. I don’t really know much about it but I sincerely think in life … [Dr. Gabass’ phone rings, he tells one John on the phone that he should pray for him & that he greets his (John) mother].

The car in which Dr. Gabass had sex with the boy on three occasions

Gabass: Insah Allah! I quite remember this eh this eh is he a pastor in Tema? His case, his case the sort of humiliation …

Manasseh: I think my Church. The Presbyterian Church of Ghana. I remember that case and the Church even said that they were going to investigate it.

Gabass: And now … in fact, what can I do? Me, my problem is, for instance, if there were no people depending on me, I wouldn’t mind taking the reform and whatever consequences. I think people go through reforms after these things but I don’t know … So, Manasseh, advise me like you said, this case looking at it …

Manasseh: I am really confused.

Gabass: I know. I know. I have put you in a very … I’m very sorry to put you in such situation because there are certain cases which are clear cut. This is it. But when you consider the circumstances it becomes, you don’t know where to … and that’s the same [as] my case. Because, I really help people. Because when you look at the way I do my surgery, it’s hardly you will obtain blood, because I do it within 25 minutes and it’s clean, it’s neat, and you don’t have any infection.

That’s my record. Errm, so these Jehovah Witness people, they like me. They recently even sent some visitors because with me you don’t obtain blood and they don’t like blood. So, always they are like my friends. Whenever they have a case … [He removes tracks of Jehovah’s Witnesses and shows to Manasseh]

Manasseh: That’s what I was saying, I just wanted to be sure the person you are. Somebody actually mentioned that you are the pillar for that department. So, I asked whether you are the head or you are not the head.

Gabass: No, I’m not the head.

Manasseh: But the person said you are the pillar for that department, so this Pethidime issue you mentioned, these are two … issues I heard.

Gabass: Oh okay.

[mawuni]

Manasseh: That the Pethidime is your problem but the person even mentioned that …

Gabass: Ah, they mentioned it?

Manasseh: Yeah! But the person even said you are … so when I see you. He asked if I knew you … and I said no. So, he said if I see you now you are …

Gabass: Oh so you see, if I had not mentioned this … [he laughs].

Manasseh: And also, that you are hard working.

Gabass: No, the point is that, I can tell you that at a point, I was down. I don’t know. I will do anything, I don’t care about the work … I used not to care because I was so frustrated. Frustrated, I can enumerate a lot of things that frustrated me. It’s the country that frustrated me.

I can’t say that I’m that right but I’ve never failed in my life but you can see my colleagues are all specialized and I was supposed to me the superintendent. Always there’s no time to … everybody has specialized and I’m just under them and the social issues so I was very much depressed.

I was actually under depression. There was a time I took myself to the psychiatric Hospital. I took myself there without any recommendations to help me … but unfortunately, when I went there, I saw that my case will be worse because the treatment they were giving them, even though they [had] given [me] a special place, the treatment …

The first day I went there, if you see the food that they brought full of insects there … so I … and they quickly realized that I’m not like the other persons so they changed the food for me. And that same night, my laptop, I had this err a certain smartphone were all taken from me. The guy who was in charge there gave me the place. I thought I don’t need a place. I only need to abstain from them to just exclude myself from the world and try to come out of it.

He stole it and when I reported it to the police, the chief psychiatrist wrote a letter to the nurses and they also presented to the police that I’m mentally unstable.

Manasseh: Jesus Christ!

Gabass: So, Oh yes! I came and told my Doctor …

Manasseh: And do you have these documents from the psychiatric Hospital and the rest?

Gabass: I discharged myself. Oh yes, I have been there.

Manasseh: But …

Gabass: No, they registered me. They registered me. I have a folder there but like I just … because what treatment is this?

Manasseh: Yeah, but I think if you’ve gone through all of these and then you explain to anybody they should …

Gabass: I have gone through worse, now I’m home. I’m fairly okay.

Manasseh: In fact, what I’m saying is not like you are defending yourself but if anybody is listening to you recount all these experiences you’ve gone through, don’t you think that would err …

Gabass: [Murmurs] With this issue, you have no excuse. That’s my thinking. That’s my thinking. I have no excuse. I hope it does not come to this, probably I would have sift it through the net and nobody know anything because it won’t happen again. Unfortunately, there is nothing that you will do that will make Allah (***) but, now, what I’m looking at, I’m looking at my future.

You are a journalist and I’m also on …

Manasseh: Radio

Gabass: Look, the whole radio as in Aseda FM, the whole radio started with … then Sky. I was on TV all the time. Even through my Pethidine problem, I used to go there. People can see me … but they still invited me. And I don’t know, maybe because the way I work, does why the authorities actually kept me within their fold till I was able to come through it.

And you see, there is one thing too, when you look at it among the Muslim … you know, I’m the only one you can point to as a doctor and all of a sudden you hear this. Look, I’m in shock. You know, shock, shock, literary in shock because my… I’m feeling warm.

So, Manasseh

Manasseh: Doc

Gabass: I anticipated something will come but when because I wasn’t myself since then, I was jumpy because when they said that somebody from Joy FM, I said I have nothing to do with Joy FM. There is no need running away. So, I don’t know, errm if there is way … but when I say there is way then the HIV thing comes because if my child is infected with HIV then I will [have] to know the source. Even if that is not the source ‘koraa’ I would want to punish that person. So when it comes [to] that then you say that I can’t escape it.

[mawuni]

Manasseh: He is actually deteriorating.

Gabass: He’s deteriorating?

Manasseh: Yeah, when you see him he is very …

Gabass: Already he is some skinny person

Manasseh: Mmm

Gabass: Ei! You can’t tell a lie. Look, anybody who tells a lie is not intelligent. It will come out but let it come out earlier probably you may do something about it. That’s my principle. Me, people [say] I’m so blunt that’s why sometimes in my department the nurses there find me very uncomfortable because I tell you if you are doing the wrong thing. You understand?

So my number is

Manasseh: Just a second. It’s (phone) now on. 020

Gabass: 0208259732 [Manasseh repeats the number after him]. Everybody has this number. I actually broadcast it on air.

Manasseh: Oh okay

Gabass: … when you leave me here, now I will be in the toilet all the time. This morning ‘self,’ I don’t know. Gabriel mentions 0268940590]

Manasseh: As you said, I will try and put in a word on your behalf but whatever it is, I would advise that you just, you just face it and I’m sure you will come out of it stronger and better. Things happen for us …

Gabass: Even you talking to me, I feel a little bit relieved because you see when you do something wrong, the only remedy is to say it. To get somebody to [talk to] but who am I going to … tell this? I have carried this burden on my head and it’s actually killing me.

Any time there are reports of sexual this thing, I break down. I break down.

Manasseh: Even though it is not you?

[mawuni]

Gabass: I break down because I put myself in the shoe should that situation come out. Then you see me, I don’t know, I don’t know. So, I meditate, I meditate a lot before going to the hospital otherwise I cannot concentrate. You know, you know that our work is such that it is meticulous work because we are dealing with the pelvis and there are very important structures there.

So sometimes, 30 minutes, I will just stay quiet trying to get things out of my this thing. But talking to you, I think it has helped. I know that fear is out now. There is only one, in fact my heart goes to the boy because when I heard he was not well, I … I have never been sick.

The only sickness is psychological, psychological and if you go to the pharmacist, they know about my drug addiction, they have been laughing at me. There was one statement I told them that; well things will not be the same. Because I have to beg them to give me Pethidine with my own money. I was ridiculed. I was ridiculed and err I took a lot of humiliation on this drug but then I told myself that enough is enough. That’s when I took myself to the psychiatric hospital to go away from it and sweat it out.

Manasseh: And when was this?

Gabass: Errm it was errm … when was this? That’s 2008. 2008 and I think after that I was called by the Hajj Committee immediately after that, you know, then I had come out of it for three days then I was called by the Hajj Committee to assist things so I was part of the medical team [to Hajj] in 2008.

Manasseh: Okay

Gabass: So, that also helped me because when I went there [Mecca], I prayed. I think the psychological traumas were on. I’m depressed and I’m still depressed but not as before. Prospects and things like that. I think I have … my horizon has cleared until now.

In fact, I don’t know … if it’s HIV, it’s not me. But whenever it comes I will be tested and if tested positive then definitely I’m the one who did that but I’m never positive.

Gabass: Did you ask him to go [to] his website?

Manasseh: His ….?

Gabass: His Facebook.

Manasseh: I asked him and he said he is err … he is no longer on it. He has shut it down.

Gabass: It’s still there.

Manasseh: It’s still there?

Gabass: It’s still there.

Manasseh: Okay let me err … I will do that independently.

Gabass: It’s still there. Check.

Manasseh: The full name he uses is? Do you remember the full name?

Gabass: He uses err … at first he used [name withheld]. First he used his name that’s how we met. But now he has changed it to … let me see. You check and see. You will see his picture there.

Manasseh: Wow.

Gabass: Because I used to go and check and see [how] he is doing.

Manasseh: Mmm

Gabass: You understand? And for some time, I have not been seeing him come online. Seen, last seen …

Manasseh: Yeah, yeah.

Gabass: Ahaa, that’s how I this thing so … I can’t contact him so I want to know whether he is okay or not.

Manasseh: Mmm

Gabass: I realized that he has a lot of friends but maybe I’m somebody who can easily be filtered out. The rest, there’s nothing he can do to them.

Normally, we go for the big fish. So, Manasseh, it’s God that sent you to me. I’m very sure that … so I’m saying like you said see what you can do for me for the benefit of … because if I go down, I think my services will go down and that will be a loss to my community. I won’t say that’s the reason for anything but I’m confused. I don’t know what to do.

Eh! My wife should hear this [?], the first thing she will do is to go out of the house. She won’t even talk to me again. And my children, she will take them from me.

(Dr. Gabass remembers the victim’s Facebook name, mentions it to Manasseh. ‘And then he changed it to …’ [referring to the boy’s Facebook account]. Gabass types the name into Facebook search engine, it pops up, and Manasseh writes the name down. Manasseh asks why the boy would add ‘Achimota School’ to his profile while he is not a student there).

[mawuni]

Gabass: It was what? Tuesday at 6am, (he shows Manasseh his chat with the boy). This Tuesday.

Manasseh: This Tuesday. Today is Friday.(Manasseh reads Gabass & the boy’s chat). ‘[I] carry heavy load, anyway, but I got up. Nothing is unbearable.’

Gabass: Look, if he talks to you, you will never think it’s that small guy talking. When we’re chatting, you think he is an adult, you know, I know he is in the secondary school age group 18, 19 that’s how … but he was so smallish.

Manasseh: Did he say he is into those things like he’s gay?

Gabass: Senior man, that’s what he said he wanted.

Manasseh: Wow!

Gabass: That’s what I’m saying I don’t want to tell you … I can retrieve. You see, when it comes all these things we can retrieve information to see the sort of information that, and you will see the messages to which he kept howling me. I’m a busy man. I don’t even telephone people. You know, but once a while I go, online but he in particular, I told him the reason why I’m so interested in this guy [is] because he said he is doing science and he wants to be a doctor.

I said, then, I will take you on, I have the books, I have the experience even though I’m not a specialist, what I can do, very few specialists can do. I’m very very bold in whatever I do because I make sure I know the skill, I know the underlying, you know, principle behind it before I do and I go there and I execute it like how it is supposed to be without any complications. So, I told him I can teach him.

There are a lot of guys in this field that I have advised and some of them are on scholarship abroad.

Manasseh: Wow

Gabass: Oh yeah, I do that. I tell them what do, where to go, how to be … well, I also was on scholarship. You know, so apart from this, there are a lot of things I do for young guys especially Muslims.

They are the ones who don’t want to go to school. You know, I highly portray myself as a role model so every occasion I will be invited and I give some small talk and motivational talk. Sometime, I tell them my life history. You know, how I grew and … all those who have problems I also … bring to them because I have also have series of problems

Manasseh: Problems

Gabass: So, there is a way we can come out of it, so we talk, sit down, discuss it and then gradually the person comes to accept the terms and then a lot of people are without hope … mostly financial. They think financial consideration is the whole thing. I said no. I went to this thing without my parents this thing but it was through somebody that I got that scholarship so you shouldn’t stop looking for … continue.

And that’s exactly what I’ve been conversing with this guy … and when we, I call him, I usually call him or he will call me and we will talk about school matters. You know, we love talking about these things because … anyway, for now there is nothing I can prove on that but you go to his thing [Facebook], probably, you may not be able to retrieve because you are not his friend.

Manasseh: Mmm

Gabass: But if you can engage him as a friend that you can do but now that he is sick I don’t know how much but ***

Manasseh:Yeah

Gabass: You will see what he can do to you. But some people can charm you but this guy I don’t [know] what he can charm me for.

Manasseh: Yeah

Gabass: You see, he doesn’t have any attribute to show but the way he will behave, you will lose your guard. He is an adult a small person’s baby, body. But I will not hold him, blame him for my …

Manasseh: Mmm action.

Gabass: Yes! The action is unforgiven. You know, that’s why I’m saying I don’t know how best you could find way that we can deal with this …

Manasseh: On the quiet

Gabass: On the quiet. Do you understand? Because the damage is done. You understand? Incarcerating me will not solve the …problem.

Manasseh: The problem

Gabass: It has [been] done and it is … this thing because if he didn’t agree, you understand, even though he is minor if he didn’t agree this thing won’t happen.

Manasseh: Mmm

[mawuni]

Gabass: Or something this thing won’t happen. If not gone exposing yourself to all this thing and me too, you see, that’s our weakness. It’s our weakness.

Manasseh: Mmm

Gabass: Manasseh

Manasseh: Sir

Gabass: I’m very happy that you came even though it’s on a very bad …issue

Manasseh: Bad note, yeah.

Gabass: But I’m still glad that you came. And I thank you. You are a listening … you… you … you are, even though you are investigative me…

Manasseh: Mmm

Gabass: But you are not probing. You understand? You are not probing. I think is for the fact that you were taken aback on … and I thank you very much. You didn’t even make me feel that bad and I thank you. So, I will be looking out to hear from you.

Manasseh: Okay

Gabass: To see what will come out of this.

Manasseh: Whatever it is, I will let you know. I will call you.

Gabass: Call me. If it is meeting the parents then also talk to them. That this were … ask him.

Manasseh: He says he doesn’t want the Father to know

Gabass: Are you sure the Father will not know?

(A man enters Dr. Gabass’ office, announces that someone was looking for him. Manasseh responds that it is rather someone he came with but it turns out to be Gabass’ visitor).

Gabass: So, errm you know how come … because I told him I want to see the Father. I want to meet the family. Ask him whether the phone I have bought him, did he tell his Mother?

Manasseh: I’m telling you what he said that you even offered some money he never took it because he was angry with you. He didn’t take a pesewa from you.

Gabass: (He laughs).

Manasseh: I won’t lie to you.

Gabass: (He laughs). Do you believe him? Do you believe him?

Manasseh: Well, there was a thing he was saying that when he became friends with you, some of your friends who were gays were also sending him some messages. And I said okay, did you do anything to suggest you were gay because if I’m on Facebook people don’t propose to me. So, if I don’t do anything to suggest, how would people just see me being somebody’s friend who is also a minor begin to send me messages. That’s the question I asked him.

Gabass: Hmm! Anyway, errm, but ask him did I buy him a phone. I bought it down here.

Manasseh: What kind of phone is this?

Gabass: Oh it was Samsung.

Manasseh: Samsung? That’s the phone he uses. He uses Samsung.

Gabass: That’s the phone that I bought him, yeah, I bought … because he was pestering me, he wants phone. He wants this thing so he should take his time because I don’t want to be giving gifts like that. The mother will ask what is this for?

Manasseh: Where are you getting this from?

Gabass: Where are you getting this? You understand? And then, but he kept pestering you he wants to talk to me and I said okay, since we have to communicate on the issue of your schooling, definitely tell your Mum I bought you the phone. Is it Star? What was it? Samsung Star?

Manasseh: Yeah, that’s the phone he uses. Samsung. It’s quiet new.

Gabass: You see the lie? You see the lie? This one will tell you that this guy just wants to frame me. You see, the thing is that me I won’t give you money. You understand, I won’t give you money but for instance, if you visit me and you are going I will give you a lorry fare.

There was a point, there was a time he said he and his father had come to Cape Coast. Then I thought from Cape Coast to Takoradi is a very short distance, so if the father should come, he should tell his father he has a doctor friend. So, he should come and meet so I can talk to the father but he said the father was busy and all that. So, that’s it.

Even there was a time, you know. That time this that I met him in the car, he showed me his cousins so I wanted to meet the cousins. At least, they should know that he is … and then he refused me to see the cousins. He said ‘no no no’ I shouldn’t … so I just left.

So, Manasseh, it’s something that has happened. I have no excuse. If it happened to Michael Jackson…

Manasseh: Hmm

Gabass: (He laughs). So, ah, the famous of all famous.

Manasseh: Mmm

Gabass: You know, it is something that is happening. You see, we have these weaknesses. You see, people errm don’t want to admit that we have people like me. Okay?

We are trying hard to suppress that urge but we were born like that. There is no way to explain to anybody. The only thing is to commit suicide because of the pain, the sort of isolation, the sort of this thing you are in depresses you. You can’t voice this out. Even my mother doesn’t know. None of my brothers know. I have to keep this thing to myself. You understand? I try to be normal. I try hard. I’m married. I’ve children. I live in society, nobody knows … and this internet thing came where you can … how do you call it err?

Manasseh: Chat somebody?

Gabass: Without the person knowing who you are chatting with, you know.

Manasseh: Yeah, yeah.

Gabass: Aha, so that’s an outlet. You discuss issues as if this then you feel okay. At least, [it tells you that] you are not alone. It helps you. Sometimes, I even prefer it much.

And you’ve seen me, I’ve seen you. If there was time I would have taken you to [see] my new house which I have been building for seven years. Trying to build. Ghana Health we don’t have money. I just moved [in] recently with my family.

Tomorrow I have a programme. So, if this thing should get to the this thing [out there], all the advice I give people will be shamed. So, see how we can deal with this thing on the quiet.

Manasseh: Okay

[mawuni]

Gabass: That means if it should come again then I have no excuse. I have talked to myself and I have regretted and I told you. I have regretted. So, I’m no more on this thing. I have deleted myself but we talk so that I will keep him in that leech …

Manasseh: Mmm, yes

Gabass: To know what is happening. You know, he can put you in trouble any time. So, I’m keeping him in the leech. But, what can you do? You have already committed yourself. You have this thing that can be blackmailed. So, you no other this thing. So, that’s it and thank you for coming.

Manasseh: Thanks so much for your cooperation too. And err … I can … I feel your pain and I can also tell you sitting here alone and talking to you, I have learnt a lot in life. And maybe mine may not be women or sex but it’s thought me so much in life. That whatever you do, you have to be extremely careful.

Gabass: That’s right.

Manasseh: So, I’m also grateful to you. But whatever happens, know that you will come out stronger.

Gabass: I’m sure of that.

Manasseh: I wish I were not the one doing this and I must also say that there are times you go to people whose stories are not … but the kind of treatment they will give you but you have not done that and I’m so grateful to you.

Gabass: Like I told you, it’s only a fool that will try to this thing because the truth can never be embellished in anyway. You only say the truth and you are freed because it is already said in all the good books; the truth shall set you free.

[Manasseh leaves but asks for permission to capture an inscription on the wall.
