INVESTIGATIVE DOCUMENTARY: Robbing the Assemblies — Part 3

Published

on

For the past ten years, a chunk of Ghana’s national budget has been sunk in multiple sanitation contracts, but the nation still remains dirty. The metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies, which are charged with the implementation national policies in order to give meaning to Ghana’s decentralisation policy, have been sidelined and compelled to sign multiple sanitation contracts, which some of them do not need. Between November 2016 and August 2017, Joy News’ Manasseh Azure Awuni embarked on a comprehensive investigation across the country. He visited 53 MMDAs in all the ten regions of Ghana and uncovered massive malfeasance in the sanitation contracts with companies belonging to one of the most powerful and influential men in Ghana. In Part Three of “Robbing the Assemblies” investigative series, Manasseh Azure Awuni reveals irregularities in the Sanitation Improvement Package contract with all the 216 assemblies in Ghana, a needless waste bins contract, which was inflated by nearly half of the total contract sum, the exploitation of sanitation workers. He also puts the spotlight on the man at the center of scandal-ridden contracts and reveals how he is connected with very powerful politicians in Ghana.
