President Mahama swears in new Electoral Commission boss

President John Dramani Mahama today swore the newly appointed Chairperson of Electoral Commission, Mrs. Charlotte Osei, into Office. She is the first woman to occupy the position in Ghana.

Mrs. Charlotte Osei, until her appointment, was the chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE). She takes over from Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, who has headed Ghana’s Electoral Commission for almost two decades.

President Mahama reminded her of the enormity of the task ahead of her because predecessor set high standards at the Commission.

Mrs. Charlotte Osei promised to “continue to build and strengthen the structures towards a stronger, more independent, objective and impartial commission.”

She added: “We will work hard to continue the process of internal reforms and ensure a more effective and collaborative service delivery platform and thereby increase the confidence of all our stakeholders in the institution and in Ghana’s democracy.”

The swearing-in was attended by representatives of the various political parties. Notable among them were the Chairperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Ms. Samiah Nkrumah; Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Afoko; and the Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Alhaji Ahmed Ramadan.
